Search Engines Reference Guide

To optimize your search results, you can use specialized operators that filter or target specific data. Below are the primary operators used by most major search engines.

"exact phrase"

Double quotes indicate you are looking for pages with an exact word or phrase.

  • Example: One might search for "passive reconnaissance" to get pages with this exact phrase, rather than pages where "passive" and "reconnaissance" appear separately.

site:

This operator lets you specify a domain name to which you want to limit your search.

  • Example: We can search for success stories specifically on TryHackMe using site:tryhackme.com success stories.

- (Minus Sign)

The minus sign allows you to omit search results that contain a specific word or phrase.

  • Example: You might be interested in learning about the pyramids but don’t want to view tourism websites; one approach is to search for pyramids -tourism.

filetype:

This search operator is for finding specific files instead of general web pages. Common file types include (PDF), (DOC), (XLS), and (PPT).

  • Example: To find cyber security presentations, try searching for filetype:ppt cyber security.
